Hanford's downtown features Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and buildings dating to the city's founding, including a 1929 theatre and a historic library-turned-museum.
Hanford was incorporated as a city on August 12, 1891, and grew around its downtown grid in the San Joaquin Valley. The Fox Theatre, built in 1929, stands as an example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture that defines the district. The Hanford Carnegie Museum occupies a 1905 building originally donated by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie with a $12,500 gift to the city, later converted to museum use in 1975 to house local history and cultural artifacts.
The downtown corridor also includes heritage structures from Hanford's early decades as a railroad and agricultural hub. Nearby is China Alley, a neighborhood established by 19th-century Chinese immigrants, home to the 1893 Taoist Temple, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district reflects the city's multicultural past and remains a gathering place for residents.
